Geoff Goding Memorial Lecture Series:
1. "Feminism, Family Therapy & Psychoanalysis: Facing the Same Dilemma?" Virginia Goldner PhD
Inaugural Lecture, 1994 (90 minutes)

Dr Goldner an eminent family therapist and theorist who has shaped much of the dialogue between Feminism and Family Therapy, was the inaugural guest lecturer in honour of Dr Geoff Goding, the 'grandfather' of Australian family therapy. In this 90 minute program, Goldner compellingly explores the shared and divergent histories of Feminism and Family Therapy while challenging our notions of the terms 'family' and 'therapy'. In addition Goldner makes many references to postmodernist thought and philosophies stating that "all knowledge is influenced by the standpoint of the knower" and that "we fall in love with the next truth" and quoting Einstein "the theory decides what we can observe".

2. "Toward a Theory of Constraints"
Doug Breunlin
Second Lecture, 1996 (90 minutes)

In this video Doug Breunlin presents a synopsis of the meta-frameworks approach which incorporates a spirit of collaboration with respect to several models, as opposed to locking itself into a purist theoretical framework. This model examines constraints that limit adaptive functioning all of which exist under the following headings: Mind (internal process), Sequences, Organisation, Development, Culture, and Gender. Breunlin advocates a collaborative approach with families in so far as identifying their constraints - the factors preventing them from solving their dilemmas, and working together with them to solve their problems. This includes an examination of the following systems: biological, individual, family and family subsystems, societal and community.

3. "What Happens to my Child Happens to Me"
Ruth Wraith
Third Lecture, 1999 (90 minutes)

Ms Ruth Wraith, Head of Child Psychotherapy at the Royal Children's Hospital Melbourne, presents a clear definition and synopsis of trauma, incorporating the varied effects trauma has on each member of a family; even if only one member experiences it directly. She elucidated the fact that changes in parental functioning and indeed the role of family members is anticipated after a trauma. In addition, these changes will depend upon the nature of the trauma itself, personality and 'the inner child' of each parent, self esteem, experience, knowledge and so forth. Ms Wraith highlighted family assessment procedures and factors to examine including: emotional tone, the family's psychological connectedness to one another, family dynamics, cultural issues, transgenerational coping styles and so on.

4. "Reality and Realness: Practice Experience and the Challenge to Theory"
Carmel Flaskas
Fifth Lecture, 2002 (90 minutes)

Carmel's main thesis was that a less radical anti-realism allows for a reality to exist outside the constructs of language, and that like Daniel Stern, she thinks that there is a reality outside of the control of the individual's subjectivity. Carmel was not saying that language is not powerful nor that how experience is languaged is not powerful, but she argues for a therapy that bears witness to the realness of experience, and suggests that people's connectedness to each other means that the experience of real events is sometimes shared outside language... Carmel's lecture was deeply involving and enormously interesting.

1. "A Morning with Olga Silverstein"
Olga Silverstein,
the author of 'The courage to raise good men' (150 minutes)

Filmed at the Bouverie Centre in 1995 this tape captures Olga Silverstein, a senior family therapist at her most challenging and engaging, weaving her ideas about mothers, sons and family therapy's imperative to re-examine these relationships. Olga talks about her own experience, demonstrates her work and engages the audience in a wide ranging discussion of gender, culture and the therapist's role. This tape was reviewed by Shona Russell in the ANZJFT Journal (Vol.19,1,1998). Russell wrote "Olga suggests that the greatest hope for ending the division between genders lies in the transformation of the mother-son relationship... love and competence, authority and compassion, strength and emotional connectedness are mutually exclusive."

The Lacanian/Psychoanalytic approach is presented by Robyn Reilly and Sarah Murphy and concentrates on bringing feelings to the surface and treating the individual subject to try and ensure they are heard. The Family Therapy perspective is discussed by Colin Riess and Sue Jackson, and examines triangulations, the use of the miracle question, the adolescent as a vehicle for providing a distraction for the couple's issues, and the family's sense of connectedness. Finally, the Gestalt framework is presented by Claire Talbot and Gavin Phillips and pays particular attention to language, body language and exploring the past in terms of how it effects individuals in the family in the present.
